YOUTH PHOTO COMPETITION OF RAILWAY HERITAGE – Rail4V4 + V 2023
EVALUATION OF THE YOUTH PHOTO COMPETITION:
The Faculty of Architecture and Design of the STU in Bratislava in cooperation with the company Prolaika announced a public international student photography competition to involve the youth to discover railway heritage and develop their photography skills and creativity.
The competition was intended for students at secondary schools, secondary art schools and universities aged 16 to 26, students of architecture and design and students of related fields from the 5 participating countries (Slovakia, Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, Serbia/Vojvodina), abbreviation Rail4V4+V.
The conditions of this competition were very simple. Photograph what the students are interested in. To the public tender, an individual with an exclusively owned series of a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 5 photos could apply.
Contest participants/competitors got acquainted with the main idea and goals of the project, as well as with the historical and current in context of the RAILWAY IN REGION V4 + V project. They offered a series of photos or photo stories of one of the 50 locations of the RAIL4V4+V 2023 project (http://rail4v4v.com/), or other railway heritage for which protection and presentation would like to alert the public.
Attributes that a photo series should meet:
- The photos are taken from one of the 50 locations published on the website of the RAIL4V4+V research project, and in the appendix of the competition conditions.
- A series can consist of a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 5 photos and must be labelled as a series with serial numbers of individual photos.
- Photographs of railway heritage from another location are acceptable but must be labelled differently and this category will also be evaluated separately.

- The jury met on May 16, 2024.
The 5-member commission of experts + 2 invited experts studied the individual works in advance, evaluated them Final ranking and the recommended winning proposal came up after 3,5 hours.

- The jury members evaluated the competition:
“We were pleased with the high participation of young photographers and the fact that they did not hesitate to travel to interesting places abroad for photographs, which was the goal of this competition. It was interesting to see multiple points of view of the same places and buildings and the artistic quality of the photographs. The awarded photos represent the goal of the competition and we believe that will help to promote the V4 industrial heritage towards the young generations.”
The experts of the jury highlighted the potential of this topic and the interest in its development in the future. They donated valuable material prizes and books for the winners as well.
- The ceremonial announcement of the results took place at the Faculty of Architecture and Design of STU in Bratislava on 20 June 2024 during the Night of Architecture.
The diplomas were personally handed over to the awarded students by the Rector of the STU, Dr. h. c., prof.h.c., prof. dr. Ing. Oliver Moravčík, Dean of the Faculty of Architecture and Design Assoc. prof. Ing. arch. Branislav Puškár, PhD., State Secretary for the Ministry of Education, Research, Development and Youth of the Slovak Republic Mgr. Róbert Zsembera and members of the jury.
- The exhibition of all works in The Gallery Underground will be at the Faculty of Architecture and Design of STU until September 2024. The photos will also be exhibited in November as part of Industrial Days.
- The President of TICCIH Dr Miles OGLETHORPE came to see the exhibition in person on Friday 21.6.2024. He congratulated the winners and wished the young generation, Industrial and Railway Heritage, every success.
